Ph.D. students Benjamin Baily and Sadie Lipman are among the first cohort of mathematics students to receive Simons Dissertation Fellowships. The Simons Dissertation Fellowship provides research support to outstanding graduate students in mathematics in the final years of their Ph.D. The grant coincides with the final fourth and fifth years of the Fellow’s Ph.D. program.

Ben is a fourth year graduate student, studying commutative algebra and algebraic geometry in positive characteristic, under the direction of Karen Smith. He received his B.A. in mathematics from Williams College.

Sadie is also in her fourth year, and studies representation theory under the direction of Charlotte Chan. She received her B.S. in mathematics from University of California, Santa Barbara.
