Graduate Programs

Welcome to the Graduate Programs webpage of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Michigan!

The Michigan Mathematics Department has consistently been ranked as one of the top ten Mathematics Departments in the country.

During 2018-2019, there are 163 Mathematics graduate students, of whom 28 are women. Approximately 87% of graduate students are enrolled in the Ph.D. program. All of these students received support from the Department in the form of Graduate Student Instructorships, Graduate Student Research Assistantships, and fellowships. During the years 2008-2018 the Department awarded over 270 Ph.D. degrees.

The Michigan Mathematics Department also offers an MLB Scholars Program which is an enhanced option for the M.S. degree in either Mathematics or Applied and Interdisciplinary Mathematics for eligible students to give them professional knowledge of pure or applied mathematics in order to prepare to them for continuing toward a Ph.D.

Student Spotlight

Yiwang Chen is a fourth year Ph.D. student in Mathematics.  Yiwang and his wife, Jiahou Liu, have a daughter named Clementine.  Yiwang enjoys reading stories at Chinese storytime for Clementine and her fellow pre-schoolers.  Yiwang enjoys swimming and painting with watercolors.  He has been to Traverse City and loves hiking the lower trail of Tahquamenon Falls State Park with Clementine.  Yiwang has even designed and sewn a dress for Clementine.  We are so pleased to have Yiwang in our department!
