With honest effort and perseverance most anyone who is interested in mathematics can succeed at learning it. While mathematics is beautiful and infinitely interesting, the real rewards of a math education are the skills you will hone and use for the rest of your life. These skills include the capability to formulate and solve problems, the ability to think analytically, and the capacity to form cogent and rigorous arguments.

Major Programs
Because mathematics is a very broad discipline and you have only four years to learn about it, the Mathematics Department offers six distinct programs for mathematics majors. Although each of these programs has its own requirements and conditions, the prerequisites and basic courses are largely the same for each. There are special programs for those interested in teaching mathematics and others for those interested in actuarial mathematics and the mathematics of finance and risk management. The remaining three programs split between those which emphasize mathematics as an independent discipline - the pure and honors programs - and those which favor the application of mathematical tools to problems in other fields - mathematical sciences. Any of these six programs may serve as preparation for either further study in a variety of academic disciplines, including mathematics itself, or intellectually challenging careers in a wide variety of corporate and governmental settings.

Minor in Mathematics
The Minor in Mathematics is designed to enable a student with a significant interest in mathematics to deepen his/her knowledge while pursuing a major in another field. While the major will often be in a field which makes significant use of mathematics, such as a science or a quantitative social science, it may be in any area of study. Students from outside LSA, for example those from the College of Engineering, may also pursue a Minor in Mathematics.
