Sergey Fomin has been named the Richard P. Stanley Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics. Fomin is among six Distinguished University Professors named this year, as detailed in this URecord article.

Fomin joined the UM Mathematics Department in 1999, and was named the Robert M. Thrall Collegiate Professor of Mathematics in 2007. His groundbreaking research includes the introduction of cluster algebras to the field. Fomin has served as Associate Chair of Graduate Studies since 2020. The professorship honors Richard P. Stanley, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at M.I.T, who in 1992 helped recruit Fomin to the faculty there, and continued as a mentor.
