Frequently Asked Questions

The advisors have chosen several different forms of communication for their advising appointments, including email, phone calls, and video conferencing. If the format is not indicated when you sign up for your advising, the advisor will reach out to you before the appointment with how they will contact you. No special software is needed, but it is helpful to have a video conferencing account ready like Skype, Zoom or Bluejeans.

This depends on the course. Enrollment for many upper level courses is handled entirely through the waitlist, so if there is a waitlist available on Wolverine Access, please add yourself to it.

Enrollment is handled slightly differently for Math 105, 115, and 116. Seats for these courses are opened periodically throughout the registration period (for fall terms this means throughout the summer break). You'll need to check Wolverine Access periodically to see if any seats open up that fit your schedule. If you are still unable to enroll in a section of 105, 115, or 116 once the beginning of the term approaches, please add yourself to the Math 105/115/116 waitlist.

Some math classes have requirement groups in place. If you do not meet those requirements, please add yourself to the waitlist of a 10X section of the course. For example, if you want to enroll in section 002 of the course, you will add yourself to the waitlist for the 102 section. In order to do this, you will need to remove section 002 from your backpack, select a new course, find and add section 102 of the course, check "waitlist okay," and follow the registration process.

We begin issuing permissions to students who do not meet the requirement groups close to the start of the term. If you receive a permission, you will receive an email with the subject line "Class Permission: Fall 2023, MATH XXX, Section ___, Class Number _____." Permissions do not automatically register you for a class. You will need to add the class to your backpack, and register it before the deadline listed in the permission email. If you receive a permission for a class that you are currently on the waitlist for, you must remove the waitlisted section from your backpack, select a new course, find the section you received permission for, and follow the registration process.

Math courses that have enforced prerequisites require you to meet the prerequisites in order to add yourself to the waitlist. Email math-undergrad-office@umich.edu if you have further questions.

If the course was previously evaluated in the Transfer Credit Database as directly equivalent to a U(M) Mathematics course, it will transfer regardless of whether or not it is taken online.  If it has not yet been evaluated, it must be submitted for evaluation through the aforementioned database.

The Registrar’s Office runs this as a batch process sometime after the next term begins. If you still don’t see the credits posted by 6 weeks after the end of the term in which you took your first math course, please contact the Registrar’s Office directly.

As A-levels are not uniform, you will be required to take an in-person, five question, 60 minute proficiency quiz on the material covered in Calculus I and II (Math 115 & 116). You will not be allowed a calculator, notes, phone, or smart watch while taking the quiz. To schedule this quiz you will need to email math-undergrad-office@umich.edu and provide 2-3 days/times (M-F 9am-2:30pm) that you could come to the Math Student Services Office (EH 2082) to take this proficiency quiz. Once completed, our Undergraduate Program Director will review your exam. The review process can take 1-2 weeks. 

About a third of the quiz tests for mechanical proficiency at differentiation and integration.  For the remainder of the quiz we are not so concerned that you get the correct answer, but we are concerned that you understand the math. Topics that may be covered include:

• Limits and their computation.
• Derivative as a limit.
• Derivatives of transcendental (i.e., exponential and logarithmic) and trigonometric functions.
• Differentiation rules, implicit differentiation.
• Curve sketching with derivatives.
• Optimization with modeling.
• Linear approximationRelated rates or strong mathematical modeling content.
• The Mean Value Theorem.
• Approximating definite integrals using sums of areas.
• Fundamental Theorem of Calculus or Net Change Theorem in an applied setting; specifically, interpretation in a real-world context of the definite integral of a rate of change (other than velocity or acceleration).
• Volumes of revolution by slicing.
• Integration by parts and substitution.
• Improper integrals.
• Sequences and series including p-series, ratio test, alt series test, integral test, comparison test, limit comparison test.
• Taylor series and power series plus radius of convergence and applications.
• Polar and parametric coordinates, and polar and parametric integrals including arc length and polar areas.

This math tutor list includes those tutors interested in assisting middle or high school students.  U-M students may use the (free) Mathematics Learning Center (MLC), located in B860 East Hall, for tutoring for math courses from MATH 105 through MATH 217.
