What years did you participate in UROP?
I participated in both Traditional UROP (2004-2005) and Research Scholars (2005-2006)
What made you choose UROP?
I was very interested in the sciences and health field early on. I knew I needed more exposure, guidance, and opportunities to learn more and be able to participate in real research. UROP gave me just that opportunity to get started in the research field.
What do you think you have learned from your UROP experience?
Different areas of research, how to be a research assistant in a clinical setting and in an academic setting, poster presentations, learned more regarding public health, learned of future career opportunities and possibilities
What is the extent to which you have kept in contact with your Research Mentor?
UROP Research Mentor – facebook friends. One of my old bosses from UROP position is still a friend and was a mentor for a while, long after my position with her ended.
How did your UROP experience shape or inform the next steps you took in your academic and professional journey?
I often credit UROP with giving me true guidance with my career and future. I attended a required seminar for UROP my freshman year of college on Public Health. I ended up pursuing my MPH and a career in public health – mostly stemming from the knowledge gained at that seminar.
What advice would you give to a current UROP student?
Try several areas of research before deciding what really interests you and what you want to do in research – data collection, study design, analysis, management, regulatory, etc. Ask questions as you’re learning, get involved as much as you can.
What are some recent publications or accomplishments that you are proud of?
United States Renal Data System Annual Data Reports (2016-2019).
Is there any other advice you would like to impart to current or future UROP students?
Learn every bit about the research process and different areas of research as much as possible. Any extra bit of knowledge or skill you can gain will be helpful in some way.
