UROP Student Success Model

UROPs Student Success Model addresses components to create a comprehensive support system, moving beyond fragmented efforts to proactively guide student researchers towards their goals.

The model is broken down into the following categories:

Development of Research Skills

Learn practical research related skills such as how to read and understand the peer reviewed literature in a field, conduct a literature review, citation management systems.
Research Ethics and Integrity
Inclusive Research; Power and Privilege.
Community-Engaged Research (Trauma, Reciprocity, Cultural Humility, Systemic Racism).
Research Comprehension & Communication Skills (RCC): Activities in this area help trainees develop a deep understanding of their research project by requiring them to write about and present their research to others.
Establish and cultivate professional relationships and interpersonal communication skills.
Learn about the varied methods, techniques, and goals of research in a chosen field.
Research Protocol, IRBs, etc.
Data Collection and Data Analysis
Practical Research Skills (PRS): Activities in this area provide scaffolded support to trainees as they progress through their research project. Trainees are required to explain the methods they are using to conduct research, the rationale for selecting those methods, the nature and value of the data they are collecting, and their approach to analyzing the data.
A greater understanding of the greater U-M research environment and research opportunities once students leave U-M.

Student Satisfaction

Student Satisfaction with Research Experience.
Research Skill Building Workshops: students satisfied with the research training they received to be successful in research and on their specific research project.
Student satisfaction with their research mentor and/or research team. Students feel supported by mentor(s).
Students feel satisfied with the research environment; feel a sense of belonging whereby students are supported and accepted by the research team and feel they are making contributions to the team.
Obtained professional skills specific to the discipline, research area of study.

Research Identity

Research Confidence and Independence

Activities in this area encourage trainees to take ownership of their research projects and to become progressively more independent in conducting research, analyzing and interpreting data.
Provide coaching and assist students in making decisions about the next steps in their research and project development.
Obtain advanced leadership roles in research (research staff, research manager, data coordinator, etc.).
Present at academic and professional conferences; publications; authorship.

Student Well-Being

Create opportunities (brown bag luncheons, workshops, etc.) for students to build community and peer support and develop healthy connections with researchers and the research team.
Sponsor workshops, seminars, and other research events that will expose students to mechanisms for processing research challenges and setbacks.
Work with students on developing a mindful approach to goal-setting, planning, organization, and management of research tasks.

Career/Professional Development

Raise trainee awareness of a variety of graduate education and/or research related careers, allowing students to explore which may be the right fit for them.
Integrate ongoing reflection as they consider the skills, knowledge and types of experiences they will need to prepare for various career paths.
Gain advanced research training and skills that are transferable to all career and academic pathways.
Access to U-M researchers and UROP alumni in building a professional network.

Access, Inclusion and Belonging

Activities in this area provide opportunities to explore the benefits and challenges of individual differences in the research environment.
Various perspectives are explored and trainees learn strategies to engage cultural capital to support progress, successfully navigate challenges, and contribute as members of diverse research teams.
Scale Research Mentor Training to help mentors develop skills for engaging in productive, culturally responsible, research mentoring relationships-relationships that optimize the success of both mentors and students.

Retention and Graduation

Activities in this area will provide coaching and mechanisms to address conflict management in the mentor-mentee relationship.
Research Training and Professional Development workshops to be successful in any research setting.
Financial Support for advanced research experiences and professional opportunities to present scholarly work, especially for low-income students.
Coaching and development in Pathways to Graduate Education and Research Careers.
