What years did you participate in UROP?

2013-2015

What UROP Program(s) were you a part of?

Traditional UROP as a Freshman

Biomedical & Life Sciences Summer Fellowship

What made you choose UROP?

I was able to get into a specifically matched research lab quickly, along with continued guidance from the wonderful UROP team about conducting a life with research.

What do you think you have learned from your UROP experience?

Basic research skills, independence and autonomy with difficult problem solving, and a lifelong love of science and medicine.

What is the extent to which you have kept in contact with your Research Mentor?

I keep in touch every few months to let him know how life is going.

How did your UROP experience shape or inform the next steps you took in your academic and professional journey?

It confirmed that I want to be a physician-scientist and run my own lab.

Where are you in your professional journey?

Currently in residency training to be a cardiothoracic surgeon at the University of Washington. I will take two years off to go into the lab and hone in on my future research interests.

What advice would you give to a current UROP student?

Really try to get as involved in your project as possible. It's the best way to grow and develop that scientist mindset. In addition, utilize mentorship! The more people you meet, the more connections and opportunities that will pop up.

What are some recent publications or accomplishments that you are proud of?

I was able to publish the research out of my lab as an undergrad student, which I was immensely proud of. This only strengthened my desire for research, as I continue to seek out publishing as a resident.
