What years did you participate in UROP?

2010-2011

What UROP Program(s) were you a part of?

Traditional UROP as a Freshman

What made you choose UROP?

Having the opportunity to do research as an undergraduate student seemed like such a unique and exceptional experience. I chose UROP to expand my learning and engage with something that felt so unknown to me.

What do you think you have learned from your UROP experience?

What I've learned from my UROP experience (and research in general) is that success is not defined by any publication or achievement. Success is the product of continually putting yourself out there by doing something hard - to learn, fail, and grow from failure. To do so is to live fully and with great courage.

What is the extent to which you have kept in contact with your Research Mentor?

My Research Mentor and I are still in touch to this day. He attends all of my graduate research seminars and continues to provide feedback on my work.

How did your UROP experience shape or inform the next steps you took in your academic and professional journey?

Simply put, I would not be doing a PhD today if not for my UROP experience. It had the most significant impact on my decision to pursue a career as an academic scientist!

Where are you in your professional journey?

I am completing the final year of my PhD in the Graduate Program in Immunology at the University of Michigan.

What advice would you give to a current UROP student?

Doing research for the first time can feel scary. Really embrace the opportunity to stretch yourself by learning new techniques and different ways of thinking! It will get hard and you will fail, but through that failure you will grow in ways that are truly unique to experiential learning. And always remember to celebrate the vulnerability that is required of you to do something so challenging and new. You are amazing, not for any "accomplishment", but because you had the courage to put yourself out there!
