What years did you participate in UROP?
2017-2018
What UROP Program(s) were you a part of?
Traditional UROP as a Freshman
(Health Sciences Discipline)
What made you choose UROP?
I wanted to participate in research that improves health and quality of life in patients.
What do you think you have learned from your UROP experience?
I learned that research can be slow but fun since I was able to interact with patients to recruit them for the study. Diet can be a huge factor that influences chronic disease state!
What is the extent to which you have kept in contact with your Research Mentor?
My research mentor wrote a letter of recommendation for medical school.
How did your UROP experience shape or inform the next steps you took in your academic and professional journey?
UROP increased my interest in learning more about how health behaviors influence health as a future physician and public health advocate. I did research on cardiac rehabilitation the summer after.
Where are you in your professional journey?
I am currently a Community Health Fellow working with a non-profit organization called Project Horseshoe Farm in the Black Belt of rural Alabama and applying to medical school during my gap year.
What advice would you give to a current UROP student?
Be open to different research projects and make sure to build a strong relationship with your PI. Stay on top of communication and keeping in touch even after the project ends. Ask how you can pursue your own independent project!
What are some recent publications or accomplishments that you are proud of?
Graduation and receiving interviews for some of my top choice medical schools!
Is there any other advice you would like to impart to current or future UROP students?
Remember to have fun with not only your research but classes and meet as many people as possible! Try new things and stay active and healthy.
