Lecture: What's So New About the New Multicultural Brazil?

Today, Brazil has the largest community of Japanese descent in the world and nearly the same for Syrians, Lebanese, Italians, and Portuguese. Chinese, Koreans, Palestinians and Bolivians have settled in large numbers, creating new Brazilian ethnicities. African immigrants are arriving just as Afro-Brazilians are asserting their “blackness."

This presentation will place multiculturalism within a historical context in order to analyze questions of ethnic identity and national identity.
