The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures traces its origins back to the mid-1800s. We have the distinct honor to continue to affect students’ lives over a century and a half later. Language learning, critical thinking, creativity, and the ability to take a wider view of the world forms the very core of a liberal arts education. Together, they enable the next generation to navigate our increasingly global society. Through our curriculum, our students become proficient in Catalan, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish while developing a genuine understanding of the diverse cultures and literatures where these languages are spoken.
"Being able to study abroad in France was the most impactful experience during my time at U-M. It was an incredible experience to be completely immersed in the French language and culture that I’d studied for years. Having never left the country before, I was incredibly grateful for the generous funding and support that RLL provided to me through this scholarship. Your donations to RLL make a crucial difference in our ability to offer assistance to students both in terms of how many students we can support and how much support we can provide. Our students use the scholarships, fellowships, grants, and stipends, that you continue to make possible, to do a variety of activities that improve their language skills and cultural understanding, working with organizations including Human Rights Watch, the U.S. Department of State, Emergency Relief Services, General Motors, and Teach for America. Many of our students go on to have distinguished careers after graduation.
