Support RLL Today!

Romance languages have been taught at UM-Ann Arbor since the mid-1800s and it is an honor for RLL to still be impacting the lives of students over a century and a half later. Languages continue to be the very core of a liberal arts education preparing students to think critically, creatively, and effectively navigate the global society. Our objective is to produce students proficient in French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish with a genuine understanding of the diverse cultures and literatures where these languages are spoken.

Each fall we welcome over 3,000 students into our language classes and offer over 160 sections of elementary Spanish and almost 70 sections of elementary French, as well as diverse and interesting courses in Italian and Portuguese. We accept some of the best PhD candidates from around the world into our program and each year we invite top scholars for guest lectures and conferences from all over the globe in addition to our support of undergraduate and graduate initiatives.

However, none of this would be possible without your generous donations.

Despite offering one of the highest numbers of study abroad scholarships in LSA and being one of the few units that offer internship stipends to undergraduates and study abroad fellowships for research to graduate students, we are still unable to meet the demand for financial assistance.

Your donations to RLL are crucial to us not only continuing to offer assistance to students, but to increase the number of students that we can help. Our students use the scholarships, fellowships, grants, and stipends, that you continue to make possible, to do a variety of activities that improve their language skills and cultural understanding, working with organizations including Human Rights Watch, the U.S. Department of State, Emergency Relief Services, General Motors, and Teach for America. Many of our students go on to have distinguished careers after graduation.
