Residency Requirements

Residence credit

Residence credit is granted for:

  • courses taken in person on the U-M Ann Arbor campus,
  • online courses offered through the U-M Ann Arbor campus, and 
  • courses taken at off-campus sites but directed by the U-M Ann Arbor campus (such as a U-M Ann Arbor study abroad program)

Out-of-residence credit

Out-of-residence credit includes: 

  • test credit (AP, IB, etc.),
  • transfer credit, and 
  • study abroad credit that's not from a U-M Ann Arbor program.

Residency requirements

These requirements may not be petitioned.

Out of 120 credits required for an LSA degree:

  • At least 60 must be taken in residence
    • Note: 58 credits in residence are required for people who have already earned an associates degree
  • At least 30 of the last 60 credits for the degree must be earned in residence
  • At least 30 credits must be earned while enrolled in the College of LSA
