When students register
Students need to register to enroll in classes.
- New undergraduate students register during New Student Orientation.
- Continuing undergraduate students register during the appointment assigned to them by the Office of the Registrar in Wolverine Access. Registration stays open until the end of the drop/add period (the end of the 3rd week for full-term classes and the end of the 2nd week for half-term classes).
Note: Having access to a course in Canvas (or other course management system) does not necessarily mean a student is registered for the course.
Recommendations and rules
- LSA recommends that students meet with their general advisor and major/minor advisor (if applicable) every term to make sure their courses align with degree requirements.
- Students may not be enrolled in two sections of the same course at the same time unless the course is designated as repeatable for credit by a department or unit. (See Time Conflicts below.)
- After the drop/add period, it is rare for a student to be allowed to register for a term.
Deadlines for verifying registration
Students are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of their schedule and the courses they are registered for. If they need to make any changes, they do so in Wolverine Access.
- Students should verify course registration
- by the initial add/drop deadline
- usually the end of the 3rd week of classes (or week 2 for half term courses)
- Students should verify pass/fail elections
- by the pass/fail deadline (same as the late add/drop deadline)
- usually the end of the 9th week of classes
- Check the LSA calendar for specific dates.
Changing cross-listed courses
For cross-listed courses, students must enroll under the subject code they wish to appear on their transcript.
- Students can change the subject code only during the initial add/drop period (first 3 weeks of class for full term or first 2 weeks for half term classes).
- A student may request an override from the department.
- If granted, students can use the swap feature in Wolverine Access to change the subject code.
- Departments are not required to grant overrides to change a cross-listed subject code.
Time Conflicts
Students may not enroll in two or more classes that meet at the same time or overlap, even briefly. Time conflicts can impact a student's ability to be successful in a class and can cause disruptions to instructors and other students.
Exceptions
Exceptions to this policy are only permitted if one of the classes does not meet on a regular basis, such as:
- Independent study
- Research
- Internship that permits independent work
If a student registers for conflicting courses
- Students who register for conflicting/overlapping courses must seek permission from both instructors.
- Students are responsible for any issues or exam conflicts that arise from scheduling classes that overlap.
- Instructors are not obligated to accommodate time conflicts.
Consequences
- Students may be dropped from courses if they don't get permission from both instructors.
- Drops after the initial add/drop deadline will receive a W.
