What a dean's recommendation is
A "dean's recommendation" might also be called a dean's letter, certification, or letter of good standing. Graduate schools, professional schools, prospective employers and some programs (e.g. study abroad, military officer forms) may require a dean’s recommendation as part of the application or admission process. Students should review their applications to assess the need for a dean’s recommendation.
How to get a dean's recommendation
To apply for a dean's recommendation
- Students and alumni with a valid umich email address can use this form
- Alumni and inactive students can use this form
The LSA Office of Student Academic Affairs will send an electronic letter within three weeks.
For students participating in a non-UM study abroad program
- Submit your advisor and institutional forms through the same dean's recommendation process above.
- While you should meet with an academic advisor to discuss how your study abroad courses might fulfill degree requirements, advisors do not complete study abroad forms directly.
