Rules and credit limits

  • Students may complete up to 30 credits of Experiential or Independent Study courses. 
  • No more than 8 credits may be elected in a single term.
  • They cannot be used to fulfill distribution requirements 
  • They may be used to fulfill major or minor requirements.

Note: All credits count toward tuition charges. This includes internship, research, and independent study credits.

Experiential courses

  • Experiential courses involve academic work that takes place in a setting other than a university classroom, laboratory, library or study, such as an internship.
  • To find experiential courses: 
    • In the Undergraduate Course Catalog, look for "Experiential" under the "Requirement or Grouping" menu.
    • In the LSA Course Guide, look in the course details section, or type “experiential” in the keyword search field.
    • In Atlas, search for Courses > LSA Reqs > Other > Experiential. 

Independent study courses

  • Independent Study courses may be courses not normally offered by classroom instruction, taught on an independent study basis, or those specially designated as “independent” and elected by special arrangement with the instructor. 
  • To find independent study courses:
    • In the Undergraduate Course Catalog, look for "Independent" under the "Requirement or Grouping" menu.
    • In the LSA Course Guide, look in the course details section, or type “independent” in the keyword search field.
    • In Atlas, search for Courses > LSA Reqs > Other > Independent.
