Note: This policy only applies to LSA students. Students from other schools who wish to audit LSA courses should talk to an advisor.
Expectations for auditing courses
Sometimes an LSA student might want to take a course without earning credit. This can be arranged as an official audit, also known as "visitor status."
A few things to know:
- Instructors expect students who audit to attend classes regularly and complete the coursework (such as papers, projects, and lab work) and exams.
- Students who audit a course pay regular tuition and fees for the course.
How audited courses are graded and appear on transcripts
- An audited course will appear on the transcript with a grade of VI (for Visitor).
- The student earns no credit or honor points for an audited course. To learn more about credit and honor points, visit Grades and Grading.
- If the student does not complete the course requirements, a grade of ED will be recorded, but the student's term and cumulative GPAs will not be affected.
How to submit a request to audit a course
To request to audit a course,
- Contact Student Records at lsa.student.records@umich.edu
- Ask for a Request for Audit Status form
- Complete form and email it back to lsa.student.records@umich.edu
Deadlines
- LSA Students must submit requests by the end of the drop/add deadline for that term (end of the third week of classes in a full term or second week in a half term).
- Students in other schools/colleges should reach out to their home unit for information on how to audit a course.
Who to contact
- LSA students: contact LSA Student Records: lsa.student.records@umich.edu
- Non LSA students: talk with an advisor
