LSA credit requirement

LSA students must complete a minimum of 100 credits of LSA courses toward the 120 credits required for a degree.

How to distinguish LSA and non-LSA credit

LSA credits

  • LSA credits are earned from courses offered by LSA academic departments and some approved courses in other U-M Ann Arbor units, such as courses crosslisted with LSA. 
  • Courses earning LSA credit are listed in the LSA Undergraduate Course Catalog. 
  • Transfer credit in LSA subject areas is also considered LSA credit.
  • LSA credits earn credit toward degree and honor points.

Non-LSA credits

  • Non-LSA credits are earned from courses offered by other academic units. 
  • If a course is not listed in the LSA Undergraduate Course Catalog it earns non-LSA credit.
  • Most non-LSA credits earn credit toward degree and honor points.

How non-LSA credit counts 

Non-LSA coursework completed in Fall 2024 or later earns credit toward a degree according to the following policies:

  • Candidates for an A.B., B.S., or B.G.S. degree must complete a minimum 100 credits of LSA courses, allowing 20 non-LSA credits out of 120 required for the degree. 
    • Non-LSA credits over 20 will be included in the student's GPA, but will not count toward the 120 credits needed for the degree.
  • Courses cross-listed between LSA and another U-M Ann Arbor school or college count toward the required number of LSA credits.
