Retaking courses taken on campus

Students can retake U-M courses, based on the following rules:

  • If they got a grade of A+ through C, P, CR, or S previously
    • they will not earn honor points or additional credit on the later course
    • the later course and grade will appear on the transcript with the notation "Not for Credit" 
  • If they got a C-, D+, D, or D- previously
    • they will earn honor points on the later course but not additional credit 
    • the later course appears on the transcript with the notation "Repetition" 
  • If they got an E, F, or U previously
    • they will not earn honor points or credit
    • there is no special transcript notation 

In all cases, the grade earned for the earlier course remains on the transcript and is included in the GPA calculation.

Retaking AP or transfer courses

LSA students can retake courses that would duplicate credit they got for Advanced Placement (AP) courses or transfer courses. 

  • If they do, they would get credit toward their degree and and honor points (for graded courses), but the original credit they were awarded for those courses would be deducted.
  • Exceptions to this policy are courses transferred from another school or college on the U-M Ann Arbor campus or from U-M Flint or U-M Dearborn. 
    • In these cases, courses are recorded as "repetitions" or "not for credit" elections. The original courses appear on the transcript for degree credit, and grades earned in these courses are included in the GPA calculation.
