Credit Limits for Major Department

On this page:

The credit limit

  • Students may count a maximum of 60 credits for a single major toward the 120 credits required for a degree. This includes both major courses and any required related courses.
  • The same 60-credit limit applies to a single department. Some departments offer more than one subject (for example, Romance Languages includes French, Spanish, and Italian). In these cases, the 60-credit limit applies to the entire department combined, not to each subject separately.
  • Check LSA's Majors and Minors page to see which subjects belong to which department.

Exceptions

  • Language requirement: Credits above 60 that were used to meet the language requirement do not count against this limit.
  • Cross-listed courses: A major course that is cross-listed with another department and is not being used to fulfill a major requirement may still be counted.
