Society of Women in Economics (SWIE) is one of several undergraduate economics clubs at the University of Michigan. We strive to foster an empowering environment for women at the University of Michigan within this challenging and often male-dominated undergraduate program. It is not necessary to be a declared economics major or even necessarily to be currently enrolled in an economics course to join, so long as you have an interest in economics and promoting equality in the field.
SWIE focuses on career development programming, which we apply through hosting career panels of prominent and diverse female alumni of the Michigan Economics Department; arranging workshops on how to structure resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles; co-hosting recruiting events geared towards women; organizing lectures from female faculty members of the economics department; and offering professional headshots.
In addition to these more formal events, we offer weekly study hours for all economics courses and social events to give members opportunities to form relationships with other women in their economics classes. Finally, we offer a mentorship program to give students finishing the program an opportunity to share their knowledge with new students interested in learning more about economics or professional opportunities.
