The Multicultural Economics Coalition (MEC) is the Economics Department’s newest student sponsored organization. In 2022, MEC was founded out of underrepresented students’ experiences and needs for representation in the economics department. MEC’s purpose and mission is to establish a community of underrepresented minority, primarily for black and brown, students at the University of Michigan, to encourage coalition building between aspiring economists, and to advocate for diversification in the field of economics. Students of any and all backgrounds are encouraged to join MEC and support the organization’s mission as well as enjoy some academically, professionally, and socially engaging events along the way.
By creating a community of underrepresented students studying economics at the University of Michigan, MEC intends to strengthen bonds among students with similar backgrounds to give them the confidence and support needed to pursue a challenging degree in economics at the University of Michigan. MEC’s coalition building among aspiring economists is necessary to continue taking actionable steps to ensure the diversification of the field of economics both at and beyond the University of Michigan. And finally, MEC members will continue to advocate for the diversification of the field of economics by working with impressive organizations external to the University as well as hosting philanthropic events to support such groundbreaking and inspiring organizations.
The members of MEC are excited to get started and make a true impact on the entire discipline both inside and out of the classroom. Economics is for everyone from every background and MEC is here with departmental support to show it. Stay tuned for their next event to help create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive field of economics!
