Urban Science for Equity and Sustainability
Cities are complex and dynamic systems that face intricate issues. They are hubs for the economic and social development of the world. Over half of the world's population lives in urban areas, and that figure is estimated to keep growing. Urban areas face geographical, environmental, and economical disparities, and it is important to find ways to create a more sustainable and equitable society as urban growth continues exponentially.
Urban science studies the issues that come from development of cities. It looks at the different societal relationships and interactions in cities, such as those between organizations and people. I am applying it to the social inequities and ecological issues that face cities today, specifically with the goal of reducing socioeconomic stratification of cities and promoting environmental justice in the built environment through data and interaction analysis. Everyone in a city has a right to a community that is accessible, healthy, prosperous, and sustainable.
My pathway provides a base for professional urban planning, design, and spatial analysis. I plan to use my education in these complex issues to pursue urban social science research and urban planning, finding ways to implement accessible and sustainable systems in cities.
