Improving Risk Management through People-First, Positive Organizational Leadership, Data-Driven Resources, and Technology
As a non-traditional, first-generation, low-income student, I’ve spent the past decade working across 12 jobs in diverse industries—including education, medicine, and finance. These experiences taught me that people are the foundation of any organization and that effective risk management exists in every role. After five years in the medical field and completing two research fellowships, I earned an associate degree in science, but ultimately realized medicine wasn’t the best fit for me. My direction shifted during my time at Comerica Bank, where I worked in Market Operations and served as a team lead. Our team acted as a “first line of defense” against fraud and financial crime, navigating federal regulations with near-zero error rates and working closely with anti-money laundering associates to ensure risk mitigation.
What truly inspired me was my manager’s People-First leadership style, which prioritized the emotional, physical, and professional well-being of employees. Her approach showed me how effective leadership, paired with the right technology and data, reduces risk and improves outcomes. I saw firsthand that when people feel supported, they perform better—and organizations benefit. That experience solidified my decision to pursue Organizational Studies with a focus on positive leadership, risk management, and decision-making through data and technology.
Through coursework in business, psychology, org studies, sociology, and history, I aim to deepen my understanding of how individuals function within organizations at both micro and macro levels. After graduation, I will to the banking industry at JPMorganChase in a role in Wholesale Lending Services - Risk Operations where I will be able to leverage and execute the skills and knowledge I've learned as an OS student!
