All University of Michigan students traveling abroad for educational reasons are required to be covered by GeoBlue (BCBS Global) health insurance, regardless of any U.S.-based insurance they may already have, including Blue Cross Blue Shield plans used in the United States. GeoBlue (BCBS Global) is a separate, international health insurance policy specifically designed for travel outside the U.S. and is not the same as domestic BCBS coverage.
CGIS automatically enrolls students on CGIS programs in GeoBlue (BCBS Global) and will bill students directly for the cost. There is a one-time sign-up fee of $5.00, and the insurance is $1.88 per day.
Unlike many insurance providers students may be familiar with, which require customers to only use in-network providers, you can go to any doctor or hospital/clinic you choose outside the United States.
As a result, students have two options to schedule and pay for appointments: Direct Pay or Reimbursement.
