Accurate Storytelling and Portrayals of Minority and Complex Identities in Media
As an Asian American woman with a love for media, representation became truly important to me when I went to college and learned more about my ethnic background in an AAPI course. I discovered how many different people and institutions have historically influenced the perception of Asian Americans, specifically in the media. Representations of Asian Americans, especially Asian American women, in the media are often shallow, stereotypical, or inaccurate. In my pathway, I hope to explore courses and participate in discussions that help me learn how to promote equity and authentic representation of complex identities in media, and how meaningful changes can be made in media industries that support and amplify minority voices.
