About
Melanie Meng Xue is an Assistant Professor of Economic History at the London School of Economics and Political Science and Research Affiliate at the Center for Economic Policy Research. Her research examines how values, beliefs, and norms shape long-run economic and political outcomes, with a focus on culture, gender, and institutions in China and Europe. A central strand of her work uses historical narratives - such as folktales and proverbs - as data to study cultural values and their persistence over time. Her current research explores cultural change following the Industrial Revolution and the long-run evolution of gender norms, including work on women and mental asylums in nineteenth-century England.
