Paul Rhode is an American economic historian. He works on a range of topics including the economic history of the American West and on US agricultural development. He is a professor of economics at the University of Michigan and previously taught at North Carolina and Arizona. He has been with the University of Michigan since 2009.
Rhode is a Research Associate in the Development of the American Economy program at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Rhode has been co-editor of the Journal of Economic History since 2012 in addition to being on the editorial board of Explorations in Economics History since 2009 and Journal of Prediction Markets since 2007. He is co-author of the 2008 book Creating Abundance: Biological Innovation and American Agricultural Development, the 2015 book Arresting Contagion: Science, Policy, and Conflicts over Animal Disease Control, and the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of American Economic History. His forthcoming papers for the Oxford University Press are “Agricultural Technology and Science in America” and “Growth and Structural Change in American Manufacturing.” He was awarded the Allan Sharlin Memorial Award along with Alan L. Olmstead for their book, Arresting Contagion: Science, Policy, and Conflicts over Animal Disease Control.
