Michigan Economics Society (MES) has had a strong start to the Fall 2021 semester. The economics undergraduate student club focuses on events surrounding education, professional development, and social themes. It hosts on average 1-2 events per semester and there has been high interest for MES events amongst the student body. For example, the Mass Meeting had a much larger than expected turnout (approximately 200 attendees! see picture), as well as high turnout during Festifall!
Over the summer, the MES Board met on a monthly basis to discuss plans for the upcoming semester to begin the planning process for various events and activities available to all students interested in Economics. MES has been actively promoting its events on social media and through its newly revamped website.
“Pulse of the Economy” is a bi-weekly series hosted by the Education Team to look at current events, new data releases, and research papers through the lens of economics. With a regular group of approximately 20 students attending, “Pulse” has become a place where students learn and interact with Economics outside of the classroom.
Some additional initiatives include “Buddy Groups” started by the Professional Development Team. Approximately 70 Economics students were matched based on career aspirations, interests, hobbies, and other factors. “Trivia Night,” the first MES social event of the semester was a fun event where members could meet in a casual, fun, and social setting. It was a great way for fellow students to play games, learn some fun facts about economics, and interact with each other. MES looks forward to hosting more future events to connect students socially and professionally further.
With the support of MES’s staff advisor Olga Mustata, MES has been successful in achieving their goal in bringing MES back to the forefront as a leading organization on campus. Special recognition goes out to the MES Executive Board for putting in all the time and work to put on such wonderful events within the Economics community!
