The Michigan Department of Economics is happy to welcome Andy Choi as an Adjunct Lecturer! Andy is interested in microeconomic theory, including dynamic mechanism design and information.

Prior to coming to Michigan, Andy attended Seoul National University for his B.A. and M.A. in Economics. After that, he attended the University of Chicago for his Ph.D. He continued his world tour as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Bocconi University in Milan. Finally, he spent Fall 2024 as a Postdoc before starting to teach classes this Winter. He also amassed a large amount of research experience throughout his education and served as a Sergeant in the Republic of Korea’s Air Force.

When asked about his time so far at Michigan, Andy repeated one phrase over and over again: “very nice!” He applied this to the city of Ann Arbor, the attitudes of his colleagues, and the active research environment. Although Ann Arbor is a far cry from the climate of Milan, he said that the weather had actually been fine so far. Although teaching seemed intimidating at first, he has been happy to find a group of committed students in his class who are capable of thinking about advanced topics like mechanism design.

Outside of the classroom, Andy enjoys jogging and running (usually on the treadmill in the Winter). When he can, he enjoys reading nonfiction, especially books by economists for the general public and similar social science books. He says these are fun and lead to great research ideas in his own work. For Fall 2025, he will be teaching ECON 395: Mechanism Design.
