Study Abroad Funding

The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures (RLL) offers study abroad scholarships ranging from $500 to $3,000 based on strength of application and scholarship criteria. Funding may be used to cover travel, lodging, essentials, program cost/fees, etc. associated with studying abroad.

Scholarship Eligibility:

  • Active student at U-M Ann Arbor campus.
  • Most of our study abroad scholarships are limited to and/or have strong preference for: declared majors or minors in a Romance language, CGIS programs affiliated with our department, programs conducted in a Romance language, Romance language programs at the intermediate-advanced level (300/400).
  • Students must apply within the application periods noted below. Students who are already abroad will not be eligible for consideration.
  • Students who are interning abroad through the CGIS Summer International Internship Program should NOT apply for study abroad funding and should instead apply for the international internship scholarship.
  • Students can email rll.mailbox@umich.edu if they have any questions regarding eligibility.

Application Windows:

Fall/Academic year programs:  January 1 through the second Friday in March. Scholarship decisions will be sent out by mid-April.

Winter term programs: September 27 through mid October. Scholarship decisions will be sent out by mid-November.

Spring/Summer term programs: January 1 through the second Friday in February. Scholarship decisions will be sent out by mid-March.

Submit an Application:

Please complete the RLL Scholarship Application if you would like to be considered for funding. Students should only submit one application per application period.

Depending on academic program, language of study, location of study abroad program, and semester abroad, some applicant pools are more competitive than others. Applications are evaluated based on academic achievement, financial need, and strength of application. Applicants are also asked to supply a personal statement in response to a given prompt. We encourage students to write concisely, yet creatively. Consider the purpose of study abroad and apply it to your specific goals and aspirations.

Understanding your Offer:

Students who are offered an RLL study abroad scholarship will receive further information on requirements to accept, processing information, and other details regarding distribution of funds. If your application details change, please notify our team at your earliest convenience. Any questions related to financial aid packaging should be addressed to the Office of Financial Aid directly.
