Internships

RLL internship courses are intended for French, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish majors and minors who have independently arranged an internship in a Romance language, either domestic or abroad, and would like to receive academic credit.

RLL encourages students to utilize all the resources available to them on the UM campus to prepare for their future careers. Internship Advising:
To earn major/minor course credit for your French, Italian, or Spanish language internship, please schedule an internship advising appointment under the RLL Internship Advising category or contact the internship instructor, Sabine Gabaron.

Course Information:

Intermediate Internship Courses: French 281, Italian 346, Spanish 299 (200-level credits)
Upper Level Internship Courses: French 381, Spanish 428 (300-level credits)  
Credits: 3 
Consent: With permission of instructor
Repeatability: Cannot be repeated. However, students can also earn 3 credits from an independent study.
Enforced Prerequisites:

  • FRENCH 281 - French 235 and one course in French numbered 250-299 or French 235 and one RCLANG 320 (if no French course numbered 250-299 or RCLANG 320 has been taken, simultaneous enrollment with French 281 is allowed)
  • FRENCH 381 - French 235 and one or two courses in French numbered 250-299 or French 235 and one or two RCLANG 320 
  • ITALIAN 346 - Advisory prereqs (suggested): Completion of Italian 300, 340, 345 or 361
  • SPANISH 299 - Spanish 277; or Spanish 278 (or 290) or AMCULT 224 or LATINOAM 224; or RCLANG 324
  • SPANISH 428 - Spanish 277 (or equivalent) plus nine credits chosen between Spanish 279 and 399; or two RCLANG 324 and six credits chosen between Spanish 279 and 399

There are two internship modalities offered by the RLL department (for 3 credit course):

1. Domestic
2. Abroad

Intended audience:
The course is available to all returning majors or minors who meet the required prerequisites.

Course syllabi:
Syllabi will be available at the required pre-departure meeting held by the instructor of record.

Timeline:
Application times during the Winter term vary, depending on the provider.  Students are responsible for securing their internships. At the end of the Winter term, students will be required to attend a pre-departure meeting. Internships will take place during the Spring and Summer terms only, but students will be registered for the class for the following Fall term.

The deadline to apply for the internship course is the third Friday in April. 

Mandatory meetings:
1) There will be a required pre-departure meeting providing the information on all course requirements.
2) Within the first two weeks of the Fall term, students are required to meet with the instructor to discuss the requirements of the course.

Course Description:

French 281, Italian 346, Spanish 299
- minimum of 5 weeks either abroad or domestic (with a language component)
- minimum of 20 hours per week 
- needs approval from the lead instructor prior to leaving
- attend a mandatory pre-departure meeting
- weekly journal (2-3 pages) kept in the target language to turn in mid-semester (Fall)
- meet with the instructor at the beginning of Fall semester to talk about experience - in English
- presentation (with photos) in a RLL language class about the experience during Fall semester - in the target language
- participate in at least one of the following: an internship panel discussion or the RLL major/minor fair
- 10 page paper to write in English and turn in at the end of Fall semester 

French 381, Spanish 428 
- minimum of 5 weeks either abroad or domestic (with a language component)
- minimum of 30 hours per week 
- needs approval from the lead instructor prior to leaving
- attend a mandatory pre-departure meeting
- weekly journal (2-3 pages) kept in the target language to turn in mid-semester (Fall)
- meet with the instructor at the beginning of Fall semester to talk about experience - in English
- presentation (with photos) in a RLL language class about the experience during Fall semester - in the target language
- participate in at least one of the following: an internship panel discussion or the RLL major/minor fair
- 15 page paper to write in English and turn in at the end of Fall semester
