The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures (RLL) offers international internship scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000 based on strength of application and scholarship criteria. Funding may be used to cover travel, lodging, essentials, program cost/fees, etc. associated with interning abroad.
Scholarship Eligibility:
- Active student at U-M Ann Arbor campus.
- Majoring or minoring in one (or more) Romance language.
- Accepted into one of the listed CGIS Summer International Internship Programs.
- Students who will intern abroad AND have been (pre-)approved to earn department credit through independent study are also encouraged to apply.
- Internship has been reviewed and (pre-)approved for major/minor credit.
- Students are required to conduct a post-evaluation after their grade has posted to their U-M transcript. This should be with the faculty member who conducted the pre-approval evaluation. If they are unavailable, students should contact the department for next steps.
- Students must apply within the application period noted below. Students who are already abroad will not be eligible for consideration.
- Students who have an internship component as a part of their academic study abroad program should NOT apply to this scholarship. Instead they should apply to the study abroad scholarship.
- Students can email rll.mailbox@umich.edu if they have any questions regarding eligibility.
Application Window: January 1 through the second Friday in March. Scholarship decisions will be sent out by mid-April.
Submit an Application:
Please complete the RLL International Internship Scholarship Application if you would like to be considered for funding. Students should only submit one application per application period. Applicants must provide a budget of expenses. They are welcome to use the budget sheets provided by CGIS as a starting point. Applicants are also asked to supply a personal statement in response to a given prompt. We encourage students to write concisely, yet creatively. Consider the purpose of interning abroad and apply it to your specific goals and aspirations.
Understanding your Offer:
Students who are offered an RLL scholarship will receive further information on requirements to accept, processing information, and other details regarding distribution of funds. If your application details change, please notify our team at your earliest convenience. Any questions related to financial aid packaging should be addressed to the Office of Financial Aid directly.

Funding for this scholarship is supported by the Chiara Maria Levin Study Abroad Scholarship Fund. The donor has kindly expanded the endowment language to allow scholarship funding to support the cost of interning abroad for students who are majoring or minoring in one (or more) Romance language. This scholarship fund was established by the family and friends of RLL alum, Chiara Maria Levin (B.A. French, 2005), who passed in 2007. It is intended as a tribute to her memory and passion for langauge learning.
