Jan Kozma Italian Summer Travel Scholarship

The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures (RLL) offers summer travel funding from $5,000 to $9,000 based on strength of application and scholarship criteria. Funding may be used to cover travel, lodging, essentials, museum visits, educational tours, etc.

Scholarship Eligibility:

  • Active student at U-M Ann Arbor campus.
  • Rising senior (graduating in May or August of 2027)
  • Declared Italian Majors and RLL Majors with Italian as their primary or secondary target language
  • 3.7 GPA in all ITALIAN courses above the 300-level, including cognates at the 300/400-level
  • Students who are studying abroad during the winter semester prior to summer travel dates are encouraged to apply. Funding may be used to cover cost of changing/updating their return flight.
  • Students can email rll.mailbox@umich.edu if they have any questions regarding eligibility.

Criteria:

  • Personal statement (500 words, written in Italian).
  • Detailed summer travel itinerary. Must include travel to the following locations in Italy: Sicily, Naples, Rome, Florence, and Venice.
  • Award recipient must register their travel and also retain proof of visit to each of the above locations (further details provided in offer letter).
  • Award recipient must create a 7-10 minute presentation and conduct class visits for two courses taught in Italian during the semester they return to campus. Presentation must be approved by the Italian section head.

Additional Details:

  • Strong preference to students who include museum visits in their travel itinerary at the specified locations in Italy (Sicily, Naples, Rome, Florence, Venice).
  • Strong preference to students who have earned credit towards the Italian major (or RLL major contentrating in Italian) through a USA university-sponsored study abroad program. Can include students who are: 1) Studying abroad the winter semester prior to summer travel, and 2) Have had their courses evaluated for pre-approval by an Italian faculty advisor.
  • Students may combine other RLL scholarships with the Jan Kozma Italian Summer Travel Scholarship. This might include students who will be studying/interning abroad in the spring semester and plan to use the Jan Kozma Italian Summer Travel Scholarship to extend their time abroad while completing the minimum requirements outlined in their travel itinerary.

This is a merit-based scholarship where applicants are evaluated based on academic achievement, itinerary details, and strength of personal statement. We encourage students to write concisely, yet creatively. Carefully review the prompt, consider the purpose of traveling abroad, and apply it to your specific goals and aspirations.

Students who are offered a scholarship will receive further information on requirements to accept, processing information, and other details regarding distribution of funds.
