The John Dewey Award recipients are selected each year by the College Executive Committee from among those recommended for promotion from associate professor to full professor with tenure. Award recipients have demonstrated long-term commitment to the education of undergraduate students. The committee noted Professor Soderstrom was recognized for the range and extent of her impact on undergraduate education, from exceptional classroom teaching and stellar service as the Director of the Program in the Environment to pedagogical mentoring of other faculty and the creation of new curricular opportunities such as the minor in Environmental Justice. Sara noted, “I often reflect on my time as an undergraduate student at U-M and some of the faculty who were transformative to my experience as a student and beyond. I am inspired by our students and hope that through my teaching and mentorship I can help make their experiences at U-M even better. I’m honored by this recognition and look forward to continuing this work.”

The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, the largest college within the university, recognizes very few faculty members with this award each year. It is truly a testament to Dr. Soderstrom’s contributions to the Organizational Studies program!
