The Department of Economics is excited to welcome transfer students from across the state, country, and the world! We value the unique experiences, perspectives, and skills that our transfer students bring to our program and are continually looking for ways to help our students find and follow their passions at U-M.

Below is a list of resources and frequently asked questions for transfer students. Please consider these as a supplement (or a first line of research) to meeting with one of our advisors.

Please note our department is not involved in the admissions process for transferring to UM. Do not send application materials to our office. The University of Michigan Office of Undergraduate Admissions handles transfers for the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, please contact their office or visit their website for more information about transfer requirements and deadlines.

The Transfer Process - "How do I get started?"

Transferring to the University of Michigan begins with the Office of Admissions. Their admissions counselors and array of informational programs (including Transfer Tuesdays) will help you get started on your Michigan journey.

Although students apply to and transfer into the University of Michigan not into specific departments directly, they are encouraged to review our undergraduate program and the requirements for our major/minor on our website to get an idea of what coursework is expected and available to our students.

Admitted Transfer Students

Next Steps - "I've been admitted... now what?"

Once admitted, students will receive information from the University about orientation and any remaining steps that need to be completed before arriving on campus. Please contact the Office of New Student Programs for more information about the orientation process.

For International Transfer Students: Students who decide they wish to pursue Economics after orientation should set up an advising appointment with a Faculty Advisor to do course planning and evaluate any transfer credits.

For Domestic Transfer Students: At orientation you will not automatically have the opportunity to meet with an advisor from the Department of Economics to do any course planning or evaluation of transfer credits. To meet with an Economics Faculty advisor to course plan or evaluate credits, please set up an appointment in advance (either for while you are in Ann Arbor for your orientation or once you arrive on campus at the start of your first term).

Practical Planning - "What will my life look like at U-M?"

Life at U-M depends in no small part on what you make of it. With abundant opportunities across campus, there is something for everyone and anyone including volunteering, athletics and workout classes (such as yoga, kick boxing, and Swing Dancing, to only name a few), Greek Life, student jobs, study groups, and clubs ranging from the 3D Printing Club to the famous U-M Squirrel Club.

There is also always something happening on campus from concerts to open lectures; new exhibits at the art, natural history, and archeology museums; sporting events, game nights, free movie showings, conferences, visiting speakers, poetry slams, Friday night UMix activities, and so much more!

The Office of Campus Involvement is a great resource for those looking to get involved at the U!
