Enda Patrick Hargaden's research formed the basis of a recent article in The Irish Times. Hargaden, a Ph.D. candidate in the University of Michigan Department of Economics, investigated the effect of unemployment on crime in Ireland over the past decade. The article notes that Hargaden finds a clear statistical relationship between property crime and local unemployment: a 1,000 decrease in the number of people employed in a district was linked to about 50 extra thefts and burglaries per year. The research, which forms a chapter of Hargaden's dissertation, helps inform the public debate about both the causes of crime, and the policies most effective at reducing it.

Hargaden is a PhD candidate in the final stages if his dissertation research and is currently a job market candidate.
