"John Enrico DiNardo, age 56, of Ann Arbor, Michigan passed away on Saturday, August 26, after a long struggle with complications from leukemia. The child of Italian immigrants, he was born in Detroit and raised in Allen Park, MI, where he graduated from St. Frances Cabrini High School. He received a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's degree in public policy from the University of Michigan before receiving his Ph.D. from Princeton University. Since 2001, he was a professor of economics and public policy at the University of Michigan with appointments in the Ford School of Public Policy and the Department of Economics. Previous academic posts include UC-Irvine, UC-Berkeley, MIT, Princeton and RAND. He was a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Fellow of the Society of Labor Economists. Widely recognized for his contributions to applied econometric methods, he wrote seminal papers on the economics of labor unions, including studies on their impact on wages and inequality. He was a dedicated advisor and mentor to Ph.D. students and junior faculty and a beloved co-author. An enthusiastic musician, he was a founding member of Ann Arbor's premier economics rock band, the Solonators. He was preceded in death by his parents, Enrico and Concetta. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Jean Elizabeth Wohlever, who he met at Princeton, and his sister, Ellen. John's generosity of spirit, infectious humor and singular personality will be greatly missed. His passion for truth and social justice will remain an inspiration to all those who knew him. A small graveside service will be held on September 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Hope Cemetery, 18303 Allen Road, Brownstown, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ACLU."
