Oleg Zamulin obtained his PhD from the University of Michigan in 2001, specializing in International Macroeconomics. After that he taught at the New Economic School (NES) in Moscow until 2011, where he also served as the Director of the Master of Arts in Economics program and was one of the founders of the Joint Baccalaureate Program with HSE (Higher School of Economics) University, a partner institution in Moscow. He then moved to HSE University in 2011 to serve as the Dean of the Faculty of Economic Sciences. In 2019, he went to work at Sberbank, Russia's biggest commercial bank, as Director of the Center for Macroeconomic Research, and held that position until June 2022. During this time, he also continued teaching at HSE as an adjunct professor. In August 2022, he joined the Economics Department at the University of Michigan as Lecturer.
Throughout his career, Oleg taught courses in Macroeconomics at all levels, from introductory "Economic thinking" to graduate level macroeconomic theory. Besides regular university instruction, he taught numerous shorter courses to professionals in business and governmental organizations, as well as to regional university instructors. In 2014, he recorded one of the first Russian-language online courses on Coursera platform.
