The Department of Physics at the University of Michigan congratulates alumnus and Nobel Laureate Professor Samuel Ting on receiving a 2025 Basic Science Lifetime Award. This prestigious honor will be presented during the 2025 International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) in July.

Professor Ting, currently the Thomas Dudley Cabot Professor of Physics at MIT, completed his undergraduate and graduate education at the University of Michigan, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1959, followed by an M.S. in 1960 and a Ph.D. in 1963. He was later awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree (Sc.D.) in 1978.

The 2025 award recognizes Ting’s transformative contributions, citing “his discovery of the J/ψ meson, groundbreaking contributions to space-based research, and visionary leadership in global collaborations in experimental physics.”
