The Center for Global and Intercultural Study, known around campus simply as “CGIS,” provides undergraduate students from diverse academic backgrounds a wide variety of inclusive and accessible educational opportunities around the world. Our academically rich programs foster intellectual curiosity and intercultural understanding by encouraging students and faculty to engage with host communities through conscious and responsible participation. CGIS programming features semester-long study abroad options, 6–10 week programs during spring and summer, and academic- and calendar-year programs. We work closely with many campus partners to develop, promote, and demystify these global engagement and learning opportunities for students at the University of Michigan.
Your Gifts at Work
As interest grows, your gifts help to provide study abroad experiences for all students who want to explore the world and learn about another culture from first-hand experience.
“The LSA Study Abroad Scholarship didn’t have a small impact on my experiences abroad; it is what made those experiences possible. As a first-generation, low-income student from rural Northern Michigan, I had never seriously considered the possibility of international study, assuming that doing so would be far too expensive. After receiving encouragement from my advisors, though, I applied and was very fortunate to receive assistance in covering costs of housing, travel, and program fees for the Spanish 230 program in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Thanks to this scholarship, I was able to complete this program and benefit from all that it had to offer me - professionally, intellectually, and individually [...]. Moving forward, I have a newfound appreciation for not only international travel, but also for the programs that make such first-time opportunities possible for young adults such as myself.”

Giving Opportunities
Gifts to the Center for Global and Intercultural Study will be used by the LSA Scholarship Office to provide study abroad scholarships for LSA undergraduates with financial need. The number of students participating in global experiences is growing, and it is vital that U-M has the resources to support global opportunities for all students who want to explore the world and learn about another culture from first-hand experience while developing academic, professional, and personal skills.
