ITALIAN 410 - Italian for Spanish Speakers counts as a 400-level course toward the Spanish major or minor. Students may count only one of ITALIAN 410 or PORT 280 (formerly PORT 415) toward the Spanish major or minor requirements. Spanish majors (only) may complete a Spanish cognate course in addition to Italian 410.

PORTUG 280 - Portuguese for Speakers of Romance Languages counts as a 279-399-level course toward the Spanish major or minor (elective). Students may count only one of ITALIAN 410 or PORT 280 toward the Spanish major or minor requirements.

ROMLANG 253/SPANISH 373 (this topic & section only) - only when taken as a meet-together with SPANISH 373, The Mediterranean counts as a 279-399-level elective for the Spanish major or minor if the work is completed in Spanish. If the work is completed in English, this course may count as a cognate for the Spanish major (only), at the 300-level.

Effective Fall 2023, forward, the following History courses no longer count toward the Spanish minor. Instead, they can count as cognate credit (300-level) toward the Spanish major only.  

HISTORY 347/ANTHRCUL 346  Latin America: The Colonial Period

HISTORY 348  Latin America: The National Period

HISTORY 377/AMCULT 315  History of Latinos in the U.S.

Note:  For students who completed History 347, 348, or 377 in Winter 2023 or before (only), and enrolled in the Spanish discussion section, 400-level elective credit toward the Spanish major or minor is granted.  If not enrolled in the Spanish discussion section, no credit is earned toward the Spanish minor (may count as 400-level cognate for the Spanish major).
