"My time in RLL gave me a global perspective for sure, and wanting to help others – having that openness and perspective and taking that to different jobs even if I'm not using the language necessarily."
- Katie Penrod
RLL: Go Further is a series in which we interview recent Romance Languages and Literatures alums to catch up with them to see what they've been up to since graduation, where they are now, and how have they "gone further" with their RLL education in some way.
Katie Penrod graduated from the University of Michigan in 2018 with a degree in Spanish and Communications. Her favorite RLL memories are the conversations she had with classmates and the immersive nature of her RLL classes.
After graduating, Katie interned with the Detroit Tigers in their Public Relations Department translating for players' spouses and children. Then, she interned at the Detroit Alliance community relations department and worked there full-time for two years.
Currently, Katie is in graduate school for social work and interning at a counseling center with clients. She is working toward the goal of fulfilling the nationwide need for outpatient and clinical counselling.
Katie's advice for undergraduates is to be open to new opportunities, even if you don't think it will shape the rest of your life. Take advantage of it, shape it to where you want it to go.
Whether it's formal education like graduate school, seeking new perspectives through a change in career path, or traveling the globe, how do you go further?
We want to hear from you!
