Complex Biosystems

To understand behavior (dynamics) and function of a disconnected biological element or process, whether it is a biomolecule, cell, organism, species or ecosystem, is impossible. This is due to the fact that the interactions between these identities cannot be approximated as linear nor are they stationary. Moreover, interaction of many of such elements/processes produce emergent behavior and/or function that could not be detected when analyzing anyone of them separately. Researchers at Michigan have a long history in studying these extremely complex phenomena. This is conducted in close cooperation with the department of Physics and the Center for Study of Complex Systems.
