About Biophysics at Michigan

Biophysics at the University of Michigan has a long history. The program began in the Department of Physics in the 1930s and became an independent program in 2007.

Today, Michigan Biophysics studies the physical and physicochemical principles that shape biology, medicine, and life. Faculty and students use advanced tools such as super-resolution microscopy and high-performance computer modeling to better understand biological processes.
This research supports progress in areas such as rational drug design, nanomedicine, and biomedical discovery.

Our faculty study biomolecules related to diseases and health conditions including:

  • ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • HIV
  • Diabetes
  • Breast cancer
  • Multiple sclerosis

Undergraduate Education

The Biophysics undergraduate program offers a dedicated curriculum in biophysics.

Students take courses that range from gateway courses, such as Introduction to Programming in the Sciences, to advanced electives, such as Biocomplexity.

The program emphasizes hands-on learning through:

  • Laboratory courses with research-grade equipment
  • Faculty-led research projects
  • Interdisciplinary training in the physical and biological sciences

Many Biophysics faculty also hold appointments in the Medical School. This helps prepare students for careers and graduate study in the biomedical sciences.
