Biophysics at Michigan has a rich history, beginning in the Department of Physics in the 1930s and evolving into an independent program in 2007. Today, we are at the forefront of uncovering the physical and physicochemical principles that underpin biology, medicine, and life itself. Using cutting-edge techniques such as super-resolution microscopy and high-performance computer modeling, we achieve a quantitative understanding of biological processes, paving the way for groundbreaking biomedical advancements like rational drug design and nanomedicine.
Our faculty's research addresses biomolecules central to diseases such as ALS ("Lou Gehrig's disease"), Alzheimer’s, HIV, diabetes, breast cancer, and multiple sclerosis, positioning Michigan Biophysics as a leader in tackling critical health challenges.
Our undergraduate program is nationally unique, offering a dedicated biophysics curriculum that spans gateway courses like Introduction to Programming in the Sciences to advanced electives like Biocomplexity. Hands-on learning is emphasized through a laboratory course featuring research-grade equipment, and participation in faculty-led research projects is a cornerstone of the program. With many faculty holding appointments in the medical school, our graduates are exceptionally well-prepared for impactful careers in the biomedical sciences.
