Biophysics is a broad, interdisciplinary field. Students in the Biophysics Ph.D. Program come from many academic backgrounds, including physics, chemistry, biochemistry, engineering, biology, and related fields.

Application Requirements

Applications to the Biophysics Ph.D. Program are submitted online through the Rackham Graduate School.

Applicants must complete the online application form and submit the following materials:

The application fee is waived for U.S. citizens and permanent residents only.

The Statement of Purpose, Personal Statement, and CV or resume work together to give the admissions committee a fuller picture of your interests, motivations, and experiences.

These documents must be uploaded to the ApplyWeb online application.

August 29, 2025 Biophysics Preview Application Deadline. More Information.
Mid September, 2025 Initial Biophysics Preview status notification.
October 23-24, 2025 Graduate Preview Weekend. More Information.
December 1, 2025 Ph.D. Program Application Deadline.
Late Dec / Early Jan Admissions offers sent out (Rolling Basis).
February 12-13, 2026 In-Person Recruiting Weekend (for students who receive offers).
March 13, 2026 Virtual Recruiting (for students who receive admissions offer).
April 15, 2026 Offer response due.

Advice, Resources, and Next Steps

All aspects of the application are reviewed carefully by the Biophysics Admissions Committee.

Students who receive an offer of admission will be invited to an in-person Recruiting Weekend in Ann Arbor on February 12-13, 2026.

International students and students who cannot make the in-person event are invited to visit us virtually on March 13, 2026.

Biophysics Graduate Preview Program

Biophysics Preview is a Fall event for prospective graduate students.

Each year, the program invites approximately six highly qualified prospective graduate students to visit the University of Michigan for an all-expenses-paid trip.

During the visit, participants learn about the Biophysics graduate program, meet members of the community, and explore graduate study at Michigan.
