About Us

Biophysics researchers at the University of Michigan study how living things work using tools from biology, physics, chemistry, and computing. Their work includes areas such as:

  • Structural biology: studying the shapes of molecules in living cells
  • Spectroscopy and microscopy: using light and other tools to study very small biological structures
  • Computational biophysics and bioinformatics: using computers to analyze biological systems and data
  • Biophysical chemistry: studying the chemical processes that help living systems function

About 80 graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty members work in the program’s research laboratories. The graduate program offers a flexible set of courses connected to these research areas. Students also benefit from the resources and opportunities available at a large research university.
