Biophysics is an interdisciplinary science that applies the principles of physics and chemistry and the methods of mathematical analysis and computer modeling to biological systems, with the ultimate goal of understanding at a fundamental level the structure, dynamics, interactions, and ultimately the function of biological systems.
What can I do with a Biophysics degree?
Biophysics graduates are poised for a variety of careers. Did you know that the Biophysics major satisfies most admissions requirements for medical schools? It’s also a great major if students plan to obtain an MD/PhD. Graduates also go on to work in the science industry at private companies (biotech or tech), or do consulting work.
How do I declare a Biophysics Major?
Make an Academic Advising appointment with us through the LSA Advising Portal.
What are the prerequisite classes for the Biophysics Major?
Do I need to finish my prerequisite courses before declaring the Biophysics Major?
No, you may declare while you are still completing your prerequisite courses.
What are the differences between the two different track options?
Students can choose from two different tracks, depending on their particular interests:
Biological Physics – the original major, heavier on the Physics coursework.
Structural Biology – heavier on the Biology coursework, leaning a bit more towards Structural Biology, an area of continuing importance in Biophysics and Molecular Biology (focused on the molecular structure of amino and nucleic acids and how alterations in their structures affect their function).
Students may declare their major before choosing a track!
Once I declare the Biophysics Major, do I have to choose a track right away?
No. Some students know immediately which track they want to pursue, while others like to wait until they’ve taken a few more classes first.
Can I start doing research before declaring the Biophysics Major?
Yes, students can personalize their degree by choosing elective and cognate course options not stated in the curriculum (pending Undergraduate Chair approval). Please make an advising appointment through the LSA Advising Portal if you'd like to discuss this option further.
