Program Overview
The Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program in Biophysics, also known as the Biophysics REU Program, gives selected undergraduate students from across the United States the opportunity to complete 10 weeks of summer research at the University of Michigan.
Students work with leading biophysicists on research projects in a range of biophysical fields.
The program is conducted in partnership with the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program and is supported by funds from the National Science Foundation. Program availability is contingent upon National Science Foundation funding.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Outstanding candidates may receive early admission.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
- Be a United States citizen or permanent resident with appropriate documentation
- Be enrolled as an active undergraduate student in a bachelor’s degree program
- Be at least 18 years old by the start of the program
- Have completed at least one year of college by the start of the summer program
- Be enrolled at an institution other than the University of Michigan
Current University of Michigan students are not eligible for this program.
Most students admitted to the program are between their third and fourth year of undergraduate education.

- Complex Biosystems
- Computational/Modeling
- Enzymology
- Membrane Biophysics
- Neurobiophysics
- Single Molecule Microscopy
- Spectroscopy

Program Benefits
Students selected for the Biophysics REU Program receive:
- A $6,000 stipend
- Travel reimbursement of up to $500 for travel to and from Ann Arbor
- On-campus housing
- Access to the University of Michigan library system
- Access to world-class research facilities
Health insurance requirement: Students must have adequate health insurance to participate in this program.
